Description: Millions of aging Americans are challenged to prepare for uncertain health and financial setbacks in addition to cognitive impairment that impacts one-third of adults over age 85. Advanced planning can reduce the negative impact of impairment on personal finances, including financial exploitation, scams and fraud, and care and spending decisions that are not aligned with retirement goals. To address these issues, the SOA’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program co-sponsored work on the Thinking Ahead Roadmap which was created by a team from the University of Minnesota and Stanford Center on Longevity. In this webinar, members of the research team will preview the Thinking Ahead Roadmap and the steps that people can take to help ensure their financial wishes are honored as they age. This article is an interview with Alan Newsome and shares the results of the survey as well as broader issues to understand the differences in retirement security by race and ethnicity. It documents that there are major differences, and that the COVID-19 pandemic affected different groups very differently. It also raises issues related to societal conditions.

Description: This article is about a 1997 conference titled, 'Integrated Approaches to Risk Measurement in the Financial Services Industry,' that brought together a diverse group of 84 professionals, including actuaries and others working in risk measurement and management. That conference, sponsored jointly by the SOA’s finance practice area and Investment Section, was important in helping the profession advance the work of risk measurement.
